As many of you know, I've recently had a tremendous amount of fun at other peoples' expense. Specifically,
I've said some pretty nasty things about the contestants for WB's Superstar USA. One of the singers, a Korean-American
who goes by the name "Nina Diva" was one of my targets. As I recall, I called her a "slutbuger," and said something
to the effect that she definitely has a future in dancing (around a brass pole to AC/DC songs, if you get my drift).
My criticism of Nina was not so much her singing voice. It was her over-the-top sexualized performances. Today, I received
an email from none other than Ms. Diva herself. Here it is:
Dearest Cooper,
Before you slander anyone else, try to take into consideration that everything you see on TV is not real. Don't forget
that "reality" type shows are edited to fit the producers' storyline. And try to understand that artists like me were given
worst case scenarios to perform in. Manipulated and edited scenes.
I'm a real person with real feelings. So think twice before cutting a real person down whom you've never met in person
or had a conversation with.
The show is already so mean and a defamation of character and slander of a person.
Any professional performer would do what it takes to win the contract within reason .
I hope this gives you some perspective.
God Bless,
-- Nina Diva
Dear Nina,
Although I disagree with several parts of your email, let me start with this. I can appreciate how difficult it is to
try to break into the music industry. From your website, I can see that you are a singer, dancer, and songwriter (and there
are only a handful of people with the talent and the courage to do what you have done). You certainly didn't belong in the
finals with the likes of Jamie and Rosa, and I applaud the fact that you now have a CD on the market.
Furthermore, I would like to say how refreshing it is to get a well-written, thoughtful email taking me to task
for what I have said (unlike the emails written by Johnny Depp sycophants or Michael Moore lemmings). Until now, I thought
you were a narcissist. After all, you call yourself "Nina Diva," and you refer to yourself in the third person. However,
I don't think that a true narcissist would have personally sent me an email (at least not a rational
one like you sent). Bob Dole refers to himself in the third person all the time, and it hasn't hurt him. So I apologize
for that.
I also apologize for using the term "slutburger." Please understand that I'm no prude, but I'm just fed up with the whole
"look at my body" method of getting attention (or women using sex to advance their careers). I think your over-sexualized
style actually detracts from your singing and dancing talents. Here's an example: Madonna has often been
held up by phony feminists as being a "good businesswoman." All Madonna ever did was write a couple
of semi-decent songs in the 80's, then become the uber-slut of the world. Another myth used by the feminazis was that Madonna
kept "reinventing" herself. "Reinventing" herself was just code for becoming a different version of the same
vapid skank that she's always been. Now people think Madonna is some sort of expert on political issues because she's
a mother. Big deal. She's an abject moron who belongs to a cult-of-the-month club. My own wife is a far superior mother. She's
also sexier and infinitely more intelligent than Madonna, but that's not important right now.
Let's take a look at a truly great female singer: Stevie Nicks. Stevie has an original voice, and she
never used sex to score points with her fans. In her prime, she was quite sexy, but never sexualized.
She has a great voice, a tremendous amount of talent, and was/is admired by both men and women (and I don't mean the
"men" who dance around Britney Spears on stage). Sure, Stevie didn't make as much money as Madonna, but she never got
corn poned by Dennis Rodman or stuck her face in another chick's snatch in order to sell a book either.
I disagree with your use of the term "slander." Slander is a legal term for deliberately lying about someone in
order to harm them. If I said that Courtney Love is a horrible mom who should lose custody of her daughter,
that's an opinion. If I say she definitely killed Kurt Cobain and that I have pictures to prove it, that's slander (because
I don't have the pictures).
But you are a real human being, and I do think you have talent. I agree that the show was edited to fit the producers'
storylines, and I'm sure they used only the most over-the-top portions. With your drive and determination, I have no
doubt that you will make your mark on the entertainment world.
I wish you nothing but success.
Best regards,
Cooper
