On March 31st, 2004, I hatched an April Fool's Day (actually "Mapril" Fools) prank that I knew would get me crossed off
a few Christmas card lists. Rather than just post a bunch of fake "news" stories (like I already do), I pretended that
I was giving up the site, and had sold it to a leftist organization called Progressives United for America.
I did my best to make it look like a real Marxist organization. All the cliches were out in full force:
1) Using the word "Progressive" instead of "Communist"
2) Being arrogant and blatantly anti-American
3) Embracing America's enemies, while calling Bush a "war criminal"
4) Claiming to be a "bastion of free speech" (by allowing an avowed Holocaust denier to write for the group) but at the
same time trying to shut down all conservative websites (especially LGF, Rottweiller, and Right Nation)
5) Putting up links to the most painfully retarded leftist groups (including such staples as ALF, ELF, and The Voluntary
Human Extinction Movement)
6) Skirting campaign finance laws (and being pretty pompous about doing so - yeah George Soros, I'm looking at you)
The most (deliberately) annoying thing was to threaten to sue for "hate crimes" about every fifth sentence. It wasn't
perfect, but I think I did a good job. The bottom line is, I fooled a LOT of intelligent people. That was my goal!
Of course, many people saw it for the joke that it was. Of all the email I received, and all the posts about what a "sellout"
I was, I think "XXX" from Rottweiler did the best job. Triple-X, you are a master sleuth, and I hope I never run afoul of
YOU!
But why should the joke have to end now? Send the link (
http://www.cooperforpresident.com/progressives) to as many commies as you know. We'll let you know if we get any good emails from them. Of course, by now the joke site
is pretty obvious (the Donation page pretty much gives it away). Oh, and one final word of warning, if you go there, you can't
get back to the "real" site without typing it in your web browser (or clicking on the one link no one in his right mind would
click - "Donate to George Soros").
I have also received requests to put up some of the more "pointed" emails that I received. I may do so (but rest assured,
I will not include names). And I certainly don't hold anyone responsible for anything they may have said. It was a joke, and
it was intended to piss off as many people as possible (then make you feel better that it was just a hoax).
